O'Neil she was in her high school year during the auditions, tried out in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol during the first months of 2005. The judges were impressed with her singing and she made it to the Top 100 round. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by the judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the bottom 3, and bottom 2. Judges were shocked by this and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after an impressive string of performances. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie in the finals.
